CHAPTER ONE: An Escape Far Beyond The Night Window
Once upon a time long gone, in a mystical realm...
There was a dim and cozy room lit by just a candle. The flame sat on a candelabrum
on an oak dorm desk. All the desks were as old as the R.Y.A. (Royal Youth Academy),
except for the two that stood in this room. Upon Princess Lexi's arrival five years prior,
the birch desks had been replaced with polished oaken ones to satisfy her demands.
Usually a "snooty-two-shoes," that prissy would get punished, but not Lexi... She got
exactly what she wanted which was the way she believed it should be because it was
whispered far across the Land of Bondeor that out of all the blue blooded maidens she
was the purest of the stock. Naturally, as Headmaster Wart's granddaughter, her wishes
for new desks, honeyed grits, and cherry topped confections were granted without contest.
If you listened, you could hear the flipping of pages in a leather bound history book.
The owner lost concentration and picked up another parchment. Lost in a deep trance
she churned out geometric equations. It was like her slender fingers had minds of
their own, and the thought of one of her fingernails breaking made her cringe.
Also, her cascading light blonde ringlets had to be combed and her silver tiara
polished to "sparklefection!"
At the other side of the gender separated hall, the bell tolled five times and a male voice
cracked while announcing the hour. Lexi heard knocking, and just as she had granted
entrance permission, the burdensome wood planked door groaned as if in a direct gesture
of defiance while it very nearly flew off its corroded steel hinges and impaled itself in the
rigidly standing greystone wall. A jagged crack, just like the one in a ripe fruit that divulges
its tears in reaction to the incision of a merciless blade, ran helter-skelter through
a preexisting lopsided dent that rested in the top center-line of the door.
Only when it finished racing through the layered depths and ritzes of the gnarled pine
tree it had once been did it come to an abrupt halt while it reached its peaceful endpoint.
It was as if the crack seemed to meet up with the slick of obsidian colored hair that stood
up like a tail but felt far smoother than the cuddliest of Lexi's pricey and pink nightgowns.
